Agricultural Production Diversity and Market Access: Implications for Dietary Diversity among Smallholder Farm Households in Cameroon

The study draws on a representative cross-sectional survey of 494 households in the Fako Division, Southwest Region, and finds that agricultural production diversity has a statistically significant positive effect on household dietary diversity. Crucially, it establishes that production diversity has a greater positive effect than market access in this subsistence-oriented context.
**Key Findings:** - 77.9% of households have poor diet quality despite appearing "diverse" by food group count - Agricultural production diversity raises food consumption scores by +7.96 points per additional food group - Women's decision-making power in food matters is one of the strongest predictors of dietary diversity - Socio-cultural factors are significant determinants that are frequently overlooked in policy design
The policy brief advances five integrated recommendations for government agencies, agricultural research institutions, and development partners working on food security and nutrition in Cameroon.
